Project Overview:

Amgen South San Francisco (ASF) is a research and development facility paving the way for other Amgen sites in sustainability. ASF is the first Amgen site to have achieved TRUE certification, and holds other certifications like Fitwel, LEED Gold, and My Green Lab. The drive and collaboration of the Green Team (a multi-disciplinary group including Integrated Service Providers) was a key factor in the successful implementation of zero waste initiatives and innovation to achieve Platinum level certification.

Key Project Highlights:
• Lab glass and plasticware reuse program: This innovative program includes washing reusable lab items from safety glasses to beakers that otherwise would have been incinerated or disposed of in the landfill.
• Cold pack reuse program: Cold packs (ice/gel packs) used in labs are collected in separate containers to be reused on-site. This significantly reduces the costs and volumes of cold packs that need to be repurchased as well as the disposal of packs.
• Equipment donations: Unused lab equipment and instruments are donated to school science labs through a local program.

Amgen South San Francisco’s Green Team and leadership will continue to promote the site’s diversion programs, instill the goals of the zero waste policy with employees through required training, and collaborate with key partners on-site and in the community.
