Located in Guanajuato, Mexico, Taylor Farms Mexico (TFMX) was the first fresh food company in Mexico and the fourth facility in our network to receive TRUE Platinum certification in 2022. With a 3000-strong team of field and facility employees, TFMX averages 295 million pounds in production yearly, servicing both food service and retail customers with value-added fresh produce.
TFMX views material and waste management as a low-hanging fruit for operational efficiency. It requires minimal capital investment and can bring financial savings at the same time. Additionally, it drives cultural change within the company, encouraging a more sustainable operation as standard practice.
With active collaboration between the TFMX Green Team and the Taylor Farms Sustainability team, TFMX achieved a diversion rate of 98.3% for the most recent 12 months at the time of certification. Strategies include, but are not limited to, repurposing organic waste as animal feed, switching to reusable dining ware in employee lunch rooms, and adopting an Environmentally Preferred Purchasing guideline accompanied by an eco-label identification sheet. Additionally, the team also implemented innovative approaches such as working with vendors to redesign and eliminate unnecessary packaging as well as upcycling excess produce, like carrots, into fresh juices for the employees.
“Our team in Mexico took ownership and initiative to achieve this certification in record fashion," said Wyatt Maysey, Director of Sustainability, Taylor Farms. "The facility achieved the highest diversion rate in the entire Taylor Farms network and implemented innovative waste reduction practices including on-site composting and upstream reduction of packaging and single-use materials. We’re excited to continue taking this success forward to additional facilities.”
