USGBC and GBCI are proud to invite the zero waste community to collaborate on the future of TRUE. The draft version of the updated TRUE rating system, TRUE v2, is now open for public consultation. This draft is the result of extensive feedback from the TRUE community through surveys, focus groups and one-on-one discussions. The public consultation period runs from Feb. 25 through March 31.

Public consultation is an opportunity for all who care about zero waste and use the TRUE rating system to review the draft, offer practitioner insights and influence the final version of the TRUE v2 rating system.
The purpose of the TRUE v2 rating system is to cultivate a road map to support buildings, businesses and communities to define, pursue and achieve their zero waste goals, driving the development of circular materials management infrastructure, behavior and best practices worldwide.
What’s new in TRUE v2?
The TRUE v2 update aims to increase the relevance, accessibility and impact of the TRUE rating system through improvements that
- Streamline credit categories and credits, improving TRUE’s capacity as a road map that guides project teams toward achieving zero waste.
- Expand international and sector applicability by updating credits and requirements to be more accessible regionally and across sectors, ensuring that the achievement of zero waste can be accessible to all.
- Recognize planning and performance by offering points for both setting goals and setting policies, as well as taking meaningful steps toward implementing zero waste initiatives.
- Emphasize TRUE v2 impact areas of closing the loop, decarbonization and business transformation, with credit weighting that rewards project teams for pursuing higher-impact activities and new credits that strengthen tangible measurement of impacts.
