Project Overview

The Copec Pedro Fontova facility, comprising the Service Station and its convenience store, has made significant progress toward the corporate goal of Zero Waste by 2029, established through Copec’s Public Climate Change Declaration in October 2021 and framed within the company’s Sustainability Strategy.

Since 2017, and with a strong boost beginning in 2022, the facility (store + service station) has implemented a comprehensive, traceable waste management system aligned with the principles of the circular economy and consistent with the company’s Zero Waste Policy. As a result, its landfill diversion rate increased from 50% in January 2024 to 91.93% in August 2025, positioning the facility (store + service station) as a benchmark within Copec’s service station network and at the national level.

One of the most innovative pillars of the project is the recovery of food organic waste through a partnership with Food for Future (F4F), in place since February 2022. Through a source-separation system, food organic waste generated by store operations is transformed into high nutritional value meal for animal feed, specifically for hens, thereby avoiding landfill disposal and significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The eggs produced are returned to the store through a collaboration with Avícola Coliumo and are used in the store’s food preparations offered to customers, such as breakfasts and sandwiches, thereby closing a local circular economy loop with traceability and the generation of environmental, social, and economic value.

Complementarily, the store has implemented various initiatives focused on waste prevention, reduction, and reuse. These include the recycling of used cooking oil as an input for biodiesel production; the management of recyclable waste; food donations; packaging reduction; the incorporation of recyclable and/or industrially compostable packaging; the sale and use of the brand’s own reusable cups for hot beverages, with associated customer discounts; and the implementation of reusable dishware. In addition, the facility’s garden was transformed into a low water consumption, low maintenance space, contributing to more sustainable operations. These actions are further strengthened by ongoing employee training, continuous monitoring of environmental indicators, and community outreach campaigns to promote recycling, consolidating a waste management model with both environmental and social impact.

TRUE certification is fundamental for the Copec Pedro Fontova facility, as it provides independent validation, under the highest international standard, of the progress achieved in waste management, prevention, reduction, recovery, and circular economy strategies. This certification ensures that the practices implemented are measurable, traceable, and consistent with global best practices, strengthening the project’s credibility and its alignment with the company’s corporate sustainability commitments. For Copec, this achievement also represents a strategic tool that enables the structuring, standardization, and scaling of the various initiatives across its network of service stations and convenience stores. Certifying the Pedro Fontova facility (store + service station) reinforces the Corporate Zero Waste Policy and demonstrates leadership in sustainability, regulatory foresight, and responsible management, consolidating a replicable model that integrates employees, suppliers, and customers on the path toward the Zero Waste by 2029 goal.
