LATAM Lounge at Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport in Santiago, Chile, has become a benchmark for sustainability in the sector. As part of the effort to become a Zero Waste to Landfill group, the lounges are committed to diverting at least 90% of generated waste to recycling and composting facilities.
Since the creation of the Lounge, there has been a focus on incorporating sustainability criteria. This is reflected in the implementation of segregation containers, interactive games with educational themes about recycling and conservation, an exhibition of 55 sculptures created from recycled materials, as well as the use of renewable energy for 80% of its operations.
Under LATAM's "More Sustainable Lounges" initiative, measures have been adopted such as reducing single-use plastics, incorporating filtered water machines to decrease the use of water bottles, and improving and expanding waste segregation. These actions allowed, in 2024 alone, the valorization of more than 250 tons, progressively increasing the waste diversion rate, reaching over 74% in December.
The active cooperation and enthusiasm of LATAM's collaborators have been key its the achievements, with people proud to contribute to a more sustainable environment. This commitment has enabled rapid progress from the project's design to its implementation, achieving significant milestones in a short period.
As Johanna Cabrera, Sustainability Manager of LATAM Airlines Group, points out, "LATAM's commitment is clear: we aim to be a zero waste to landfill group. This TRUE Precertification is a crucial step on this path, as it increases confidence in the implemented processes, ensuring that our practices are recognized and validated internationally. It is also a recognition of all the teams that make up the LATAM group and our main stakeholders."
