MaryEllen Etienne
Co-Founder, Zero Waste Ventures
TRUE Advisor
As part of the team that developed the world's first third-party verified Zero Waste Certification system - I would be pleased to help your facility become more sustainable.
BIO: I have been working in field of sustainability for nearly two decades, with an expertise in waste reduction, reuse and recycling. I work to increase awareness of “zero waste” – a central tenant of sustainability; and have extensive experience in finding new markets for recyclable and reusable materials, conducting groundbreaking industry research and improving efficiencies in reuse operations. I provide ongoing input into the reuse and recycling industry’s growth and development, and helps businesses, municipalities, and nonprofits incorporate robust zero waste policies and strategies into their sustainability efforts. I recently finished working with Congressman Ellison’s office to revise and reintroduce legislation that will help develop and support zero waste activities around the country. Prior to that, I contributed to the development of two pioneering initiatives in the field of sustainable materials management – as a member of the National Recycling Coalition’s National Standards Certification Board she helped craft a set of nationally-recognized criteria to certify professional sustainable materials management training programs; and as a member of the US Zero Waste Business Council Advisory Board she helped develop the nation's first Zero Waste Business Certification program (now GBCI's TRUE) for facilities and professionals. I am a co-founder of Zero Waste Ventures, a Regional Manager of US Green Building Council of Ohio, and President of Reuse International. Prior to this, MaryEllen ran Reuse Alliance and ReuseNYC, worked at the London Community Recycling Network, NY WasteMatch, Materials for the Arts and served as an AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer. MaryEllen is the President of the board of directors of Association of Ohio Recyclers, and is an at-large board member of the National Recycling Coalition and a board advisor to SCRAP USA.
